Rounding third and heading for home, the Smart Talk Connected Conversations finished it’s fourth in a five part series for 2011 with Alison Levine in Cincinnati last evening.  Alison was the Team Captain of the 1st American Women’s Everest Expedition and Groundbreaking Polar Adventurer; Alison Levine is no stranger to risk-taking.  She’s survived sub-zero temperatures, hurricane-force winds, sudden avalanches, and a career on Wall Street.  Levine was born with a life-threatening heart condition that precluded most demanding physical activities.  After her initial diagnosis she had surgery that changed her life – and climbing stairs soon gave way to climbing mountains.  To learn more about Alison, check out her website, www.AlisonLevine.com

As always, Smart Talk hosts another amazing women with yet another amazing journey.  Don’t miss the last speaker in the series, Ms. Della Reese.  She will be at the Aronoff in Cincinnati on May 17th.  For ticket information, see here.

Ever think about the ingredients in your lipsticks and lip balms?  Probably not.  Why would you?  If  it’s available in stores, it’s safe, right?  Wrong!

Did you know that women use and ingest about 7 pounds of lip products over a lifetime?  And many of those lip products contain petroleum, a by-product of oil.  (gross!)  The petroleum jelly provides the gloss and shine to the lipstick, but there is an eminent danger lurking below that shimmery gloss.  The European Union has even banned many petroleum jelly products, and experts are concerned that they may be linked to cancer.  The last thing we need is danger in our lip balms, for crying out loud.

It’s a simple fix, so not to worry.  Simply use products that do not contain petroleum.  Start reading those ingredient labels and see what you are actually putting on and in your body.

Stick with ingredients you know and trust, like beeswax, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, and organic peppermint.  That’s a healthy recipe for a safe lip balm.  Not only that, it works better to moisturize your lips.   Good quality lip balms will make your lips feel moisturized and soft, and not like there is two pounds of an oil slick sitting on your lips.

Want to find your new favorite lip balm?  Try Supernatural Botanicals Lip Balm. With customers ranging from toddlers to glamorous divas to union-metal working men (yes, we actually had an entire crew of union metal workers in a clinical test trial), this lip balm can’t be beat!  And because our lip balm does not contain petroleum, it doesn’t give your lips a shiny or greasy appearance (one accolade that the men in our study loved).  Try it, you’ll love it!  Guaranteed!

You might be surprised to learn that adding a little salt to your bath water can actually help improve your circulation.  Bath salts also reduce tenderness.  They are recommended for people with back pain, arthritis, muscle tension or spasms, and minor work and sports injuries.  They’re great for easing stiff, sore, muscles and aching feet and legs. Perfect for post-workout relief for sore muscles.Bath salts open the pores to purify the skin, cleansing away dirt, sweat, and toxins. They aid in the healing of dry skin, making skin softer and more supple. Salts can help improve common irritations such as insect bites, minor rashes, and calluses on feet, as well as more serious skin conditions like athlete’s foot, eczema, and psoriasis. High quality salts may also help improve the appearance of scars.  Salts made with essential oils offer the added benefit of aromatherapy. Pleasant, soothing scents have been shown to induce calmness and promote relaxation. Scented bath salts combine these attributes with other healing properties. The ability to relax and unwind at the end of the day is also the best way to insure sound, restful sleep at night, and bath salts can help.

Lavender essential oil has a vast range of healing and therapeutic properties.  When using skincare or aromatherapy products, be sure the ingredients contain “lavender essential oil”, not lavender fragrance oil, in order to receive the healing and therapeutic benefits of pure lavender.

The following are just some of the many reasons to use lavender for it’s healing abilities.

Nervous System: Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves. Therefore, it helps in treating migraines, headaches, anxiety, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness and increases mental activity.

Sleep: Lavender essential oil induces sleep and hence it is often recommended for insomnia.

Pain Relief: Lavender essential oil is also an excellent remedy for various types of pains including those caused by sore muscles, tense muscles, muscular aches, rheumatism, sprains, backache and lumbago. A regular massage with lavender oil provides relief from pain in the joints.

Urine Flow: Lavender essential oil is good for urinary disorders as it stimulates urine production. It helps in restoring hormonal balance and reduces cystitis or inflammation of the urinary bladder. It also reduces any associated cramps.

Respiratory Disorders: Lavender oil is extensively used for various respiratory problems including throat infections, flu, cough, cold, asthma, sinus congestion, bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. The oil is either used in the form of vapour or applied on the skin of neck, chest and back. It is also added in many vaporizers and inhalers used for cold and coughs.

Skin Care: The health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It is used to treat various skin disorders such as acne, wrinkles, psoriasis, and other inflammations. It heals wounds, cuts, burns, and sunburns rapidly as it aids in the formation of scar tissues. Lavender oil is added to chamomile to treat eczema.

Hair Care: Lavender essential oil is useful for the hair as it can be very effective on lice and lice eggs or nits.

Blood Circulation: Lavender essential oil is also good for improving blood circulation. It lowers blood pressure and is used for hypertension.

Digestion: Lavender oil is useful for digestion as it increases the mobility of the intestine. The oil also stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile and thus aids in treating indigestion, stomach pain, colic, flatulence, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Immunity: Regular use of lavender essential oil provides resistance to diseases.

We had a great time with Soledad O’Brien last night with Smart Talk Connected Conversations in Cincinnati.

The one thing we all took away from Soledad was that she’s one smart cookie.  She is, after all, a Harvard graduate.  Soledad said the inspiration for her to go to Harvard was that all five of her siblings went to Harvard (kudos to the elder O’Briens).   She went on to say that her sister , whom she said was no scholar, just a good student, advised her every step of the way while Soledad was in high school.

At heart, though, Soledad is a journalist and it shines through every time she speaks.  Soledad was on the scene in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti.  She did a great job of communicating the intricate details of such massive devastation.  If journalism is your thing, look to Soledad as one of your mentors.

Now that Old Man Winter is rounding third and heading for home, your skin is probably at its height of being dry and itchy.  Not to worry, this is a super-simple fix.

By simply using exfoliating gloves in the shower, you gently exfoliate your dry skin away with each and every shower.   Shower gloves are slightly abrasive, yet gentle enough to not  scratch your skin.

Soap the gloves up with a great soap, either liquid or bar soap, and scrub every square inch of your skin.  Follow up with a fabulous moisturizing lotion or body oil, and your skin will be shorts-ready this Spring.

Have you seen the Linen Sprays at Supernatural Botanicals lately?

Why use a linen spray?  Linen sprays provide not only aromatherapy for the scent of your room, but also for your clothes, your bed linens, your furniture, and even your car seats if you have cloth car seats.

Instead of throwing your clothes into the laundry, go green, skip the laundry cycle and simply spray them down with our Fabric Softener Fresh Linen Spray. Not only will this help to release the wrinkles out of your clothes, but it gives them an instantly fresh scent as if they were just pulled from the dryer.

Want to sleep better?  Use our Lavender Water to spray your sheets before slipping into them.  Lavender has aromatherapeutic properties that help to relax and calm the mind.
