Bath Temperatures

A morning bath can make you feel revitalized. Use a stimulating essential oil such as rosemary or grapefruit.

Don’t stay in the tub too long, as an ultra-long bath strains your circulation and hot water dissolves your skin’s natural lipids. There is a definite correlation between bath temperatures, duration of soak and the mood your bath leaves you in.

REFRESHING
77 degrees F to 86 degrees F – Duration 10 minutes

RELAXING
98 degrees F to 102 degrees F – Duration 15-20 minutes

THERAPEUTIC
102 degrees F to 104 degrees F – Duration 10-30 minutes. To treat a cold or induce sweating.

Soapbox Cincinnati features Supernatural Botanicals

Soapbox Cincinnati is an online magazine that I read regularly, so I was pleased as punch when they decided to feature Supernatural Botanicals as a Featured Growth Company.  A huge THANK YOU to the folks over at Soapbox Cincinnati and especially to Alyce Vilines for writing such a great article.

The following is from the SoapboxMedia website.

A self-proclaimed “girly-girl,” Supernatural Botanicals CEO Robin Feltner makes no apologies. If anything, she considers her feminine nature at the very center of her company’s success. In early 2008, after a lifetime of creating her own personal skincare products at home, and gifting family and friends with the same, Feltner launched Supernatural Botanicals, an eco-chic bath and body company, located in Delhi.

A combination of her passion for beauty products and her disillusionment with what was available on the market (“I didn’t want to smell like bubblegum,” she said) prompted Feltner to begin mixing her own formulas. A former pharmacy major at the University of Cincinnati, Feltner has a healthy knowledge of what is beneficial, as well as what is potentially harmful, to the skin.

“Ninety-five percent of what we put on our skin is absorbed by the body,” said Feltner, who sees no reason to use unnecessary chemicals and preservatives “with the array of organic ingredients available to us in nature.”

Feltner relies on centuries-old recipes to create her products, using pure essential oils, vitamins, high-quality beeswaxes, botanical extracts, and pure cocoa butters to produce her extensive skincare line and prides herself on adhering to green practices and principles in their manufacture.

Feltner also speaks passionately about her target market. Though the Supernatural Botanicals line has shown universal appeal, Feltner defines her targeted customer as the 25-and-older “grown, sexy woman.”

Offering a wide selection of organic body lotions, spa soaps, linen sprays, a botanical skincare system and more, the Supernatural Botanicals company has garnered popular national attention in its two short years in business. The company was recently contacted by “Everyday with Rachael Ray” magazine for a feature in an upcoming issue because of the many favorable web posts they’ve received about Supernatural Botanicals.  Consumer demand in their east-coast-to-west coast distribution has spawned the development of a soon-to-be-released hair-care line, as well as a line of men’s skincare formulas.

With business booming, the company is also quickly outgrowing its home base and they are already anticipating the need for additional employees to deal with the busy holiday season ahead.

Those are impressive problems to have for a company born in the midst of a recession. Feltner sees the economic climate as a blessing. “I wasn’t looking for instant success. In this economy, I have had to work for it and I feel a great deal of pride in that.”  It seems beauty, after all, is more than skin deep.

Spa Water

Flavored waters are popular at high end spas, and they are so simple to make at home.  Jasmine flowers are perfect for making a fragrant and refreshing drink to enjoy as you pamper yourself.

Jasmine water is especially popular in India, China and Southeast asia.

Simply place jasmine flowers (or lavender or rose) into a glass pitcher and cover with filtered water.  Refrigerate for at least 24 hours to allow the flowers to perfume the water.  Strain the liquid, discarding the jasmine, lavender or rose.  Of note, make sure the flowers you are using are organic to be sure you are not drinking pesticides with your water.

Aphrodisiac Aroma

A study from the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago found that the scent of orange based fragrances increases male arousal by 20 percent.

Try Supernatural Botanicals Organic Orange Spa Soap.  The fresh-fruit smell is absolutely amazing in the shower and as a facial wash…and now latest research shows that you’ll arouse 20 percent more men when you use it.  Bonus!  What’s not to love about that?

Kiwi Facial Cleanser

Considering your skin absorbs almost everything (about 98%) of what’s put on it, it’s beneficial to be mindful of what you are using to cleanse and moisturize your skin with.  Homemade blends are often times more effective than department store, Paraben-laced, products.   Use fruit to create sensational all-natural skincare recipes.   Try this kiwi facial cleanser.  It’s pH balance is middle of the road …meaning it’s formulated for normal to dry skin types.  The finely ground almonds make it perfect for gentle exfoliation.

1 kiwi fruit
2 tablespoons of plain yogurt
1 tablespoon orange water
1 tablespoon apricot or almond oil
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon finely ground almonds
2 drops orange (or your favorite citrus) essential oil

Puree the kiwi fruit in a food processor until liquid. During processing, add yogurt, orange water, almond or apricot oil, and ground almonds. Process until thick and cream like.  Add essential and stir to mix. To apply, massage gently over neck, face and décolleté to cleanse. Rinse well.  Makes one application.

At home spa treatments

Not only is fruit good for you, it’s good on you.  Fruit is an incredible multi-tasker in that its purely nutritious and it’s beneficial to your skin when topically applied.  Try a fresh fruit peel for your face and body.  A simple kitchen basting brush (either silicone or with very soft bristles) can be used to “paint” your body in the shower to exfoliate and moisturize every inch of your skin.  Pineapple and papaya contain natural enzymes and alpha-hydroxy acids that remove dead skin cells while the honey moisturizes the skin.  At home spa treatments are closer than you think.

  • Gentle Fruit Peel

  • 1 cup fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 cup fresh papaya
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Puree fruit together then add the honey and mix into a smooth paste
  • Apply to skin and let dry for approximately 5-10 minutes, rinse clean
