Acne Culprits

Experience acne as an adult?  It could be your mineral makeup.  Talc-containing power makeup is made up of tiny crystals that can clog pores.  If you are experiencing acne, check out the ingredients label on your mineral makeup to be sure your makeup is talc-free.

Mascara 101

Cover Girl has done an excellent job of letting their customers know exactly how to use their products via video clips by professional makeup artists on their website.  There are plenty of makeup tutorials for looks from casual to smokey eyes that are easy to understand and apply.

They also provide informative general information, like these simple five rules about mascara.  Check out Cover Girl for practical applications on how to look sensational!

Mascara 101

  • Never, ever pump the wand – this adds air to the mascara container, which will only make your mascara dry out faster.
  • As a general rule, brown or soft black are best for daytime; black works best for night.
  • Use less mascara on lower lashes than on top lashes. Or forego mascara on lower lashes for a more casual look.
  • If your mascara smells funny or is more than six months old, chuck it. The eyes are very sensitive to bacteria.
  • After you’ve coated lashes with mascara, add just one more layer to the outer corners. The extra coat will make your lashes look especially long.

Soft Eyes, Bold Lips

This is my absolute favorite makeup look, soft eyes and bold lips.  It works for me, but play up your best feature.  My favorite lip look is wearing a lip pencil over the entire lips.  You can follow this with a tiny bit of lip balm or gloss if  it feels too dry.  The advantage of this is that it “stains” the lip with color, as if you’re not wearing wearing lipstick at all.  You have all the color, but none of the glossy/sticky mess.  And it’s completely kiss-proof.  Pencils have great staying power, too.  You’ll apply the lip pencil to your lips far less often than  you would a lipstick or gloss.  Best of all, they are less expensive than lipsticks.  It’s a win/win.

Trend Alert: Fall 2010 Cosmetics

According to New York Fashion Week, reddish/brown eye shadows, along with nude lips, will be all the rage for the 2010 Fall season.  Feeling completely underwhelmed by that statement?   Me too!  Nude lips have been around for too many seasons.  I’d never want to play down my lips…they are my best feature!

I do agree with the general rule that if you are going to do a heavy eye shadow, you should keep your lips more neutral.  At the core, it’s good advice.  However, barely noticeable nude  lips are so boring.  They bring nothing to the party.  It makes your teeth look yellow.  And so many women, in an attempt to do the nude lip, have gone ultra-shimmery in color, looking like a bad Bon Jovi flashback to the 80s.

Conversely, red lips have been around since Cleopatra and will always be in fashion.  For more thoughts on Red Lips, see here.

What do you think about Fall’s projected look in cosmetics?  Love it or lose it?  I’m on Team Lose It when it comes to this look.

Out With Old Makeup

mascara

In the Cold and Flu season, you should replace your mascara and lipstick once a month to avoid germs that can take you, and your immune system, down for the count.  Head germs off at the pass and avoid getting sick by having good makeup hygiene.  If anything (at all) has been in your makeup bag longer than three months, toss it.  Wash makeup brushes with shampoo and conditioner and let air dry to keep all makeup tools clean and free of germs.

Makeup Vanities

Are makeup vanities an area of forgotten interior design?  Approximately 90% of women are wear makeup every day, so one would think this would be a vital and key area in a girl’s home.  A quick Google search on makeup vanities depicts sad results.  There are scarce findings, and very few gorgeous makeup areas to be found …anywhere.  Since this is an area most of us utilize every morning, it should be beautiful and inviting, and a gorgeous place to start your day.

I have, however, found a few examples where they got it right.  Check out the amazing spaces below.

makeup-vanity-3.jpg  What they’ve done right:  Crisp and clean white walls and curtains makes this makeup area feel light and breezy.  The carpet and chair add a nice punch of color and contrast.  The over head chandelier brings beautiful elegance to the room.

makeup-vanity.jpg  What they’ve done right:  They stuck with a theme …old Hollywood with a twist of French decor.  The furniture is ultra-feminine and girly, the lamp picks up the color from the pale pink walls.  Sunlight streams in for the back, reflecting off the mirrored table.  Gorgeous!

makeup-vanity-2.jpg  What they’ve done right:  Beautiful architectural details with the arches, filled with a wall-sized mirror that reflects the light from behind.  Beautiful tiled flooring in white with flower accents brightens the space.  Small mirror attached to the wall for tasks such as putting on mascara.

If you adore design, visit my friend Julia’s blog, over at Hooked On Houses.    She has an amazing blog that features everything “houses.”

Best Mascara…Ever

kim-k-great-lash.jpg

There’s a reason that Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara is the best selling mascara in America.  Great Lash is used by many, many makeup artists in Hollywood, and models have been singing the praises of Great Lash for years.  It’s inexpensive, and it works great!  It also makes your eyelashes look a mile long.  What’s not to love?  (editorial note)….try the curved brush in brownish-black.  Looks great on blondes.
