Maybe. That’s why the FDA is considering banning Triclosan, a bacteria-killing chemical used in hand sanitizers and liquid soaps. Some experts think that it alters hormones and helps to create antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Further studies are needed to determine if the additive is dangerous. The reality is, we really don’t know yet. The jury is still out on this one. It’s best just to go old school and use regular soap and water to clean your hands until we know more.

Did you know you can use a lip balm on your cuticles to keep them moisturized. It helps prevent hang nails, and prevents them from becoming overtly dry and jagged.

To remove a splinter painlessly, dissolve Epsom salt in warm water, then soak the affected splintered-area in the warm salt mixture. It will draw the splinter right out. This works great on kids and adults alike who cringe at the sight of tweezers near their splinter.

Diet is the single most important contributor to fingernail appearance. Like the hair and skin, fingernails require certain nutrients to thrive. More importantly, the nails are excellent indicators of your overall health since they show signs of deficiencies before they may be apparent elsewhere.
Nails are largely composed of a special kind of protein called keratin and need adequate supplies of dietary protein to stay strong. Some say that calcium is also essential for beautiful nails, although recent studies have questioned this. However, including it as part of a balanced diet offers other benefits like strong bones, so do not skimp on dairy foods.
Essential fatty acids like Omega-3, which is found in fish, will support nail growth, as will a diet rich in vitamins C, D, E, B-12, and A.
If your diet is lacking, it’s easy to meet these requirements by taking a multivitamin, which should also contain a day‘s supply of zinc, iron, and sulfur.
If you want stronger, longer and healthier nails, eat a healthy diet, take multivitamins, have regular manicures, and overall, be kinder and gentler to your nails.

The winter months can be brutal on the appearance of your hands. Not only are your nails more frail, but your skin becomes dry and scaly. You can keep your hands pretty with regular exfoliation. When your hands need some 911 help, follow these instructions: At least twice a day, wash your hands with a vegetable-based all-natural sugar scrub. A vegetable-based sugar scrub does not leave your hands feeling like an oil slick…veggie-based formulas have a perfect consistency of super soft sugar. The soft sugar will gently exfoliate the top layer of dry skin on the hands, and leaves a protective soft coating on your hands. Follow with lotion and your hands will look great in a matter of days.

To prevent nail polish from bubbling, apply Witch Hazel with a cotton ball to the nails before applying polish. Allow polish to dry in between coats, and give nails a little extra time to dry before the clear coat of polish at the end.

The fall and winter months can be torture on your skin and nails. You can reduce the amount of torture they endure, however, by proper care. One way to protect fingernails and keep them looking healthy is to apply a clear coat of polish to them. Even if you aren’t a fan of painted nails, applying a clear coat is more so for protection than beauty (although it can be pretty, too.) A clear coat of polish will lock in the natural moisture and protect the nails to make them stronger. It also gives you a more polished (pardon the pun) overall appearance. Be sure to moisturize hands often, making sure to rub lotion into your cuticles to keep them soft and moisturized. It’s as easy as that to have pretty fingernails.
